Rabat Oudiya

17th century fortress sits on the bluff above the harbor where the Bou Regreg river flows into the Atlantic.    The original garrison area to the right now contains a beautiful garden, a cluster of small museums, and a cafe which overlooks the river.  The gate at the top leads into labyrintine alleyways of a Mediterranean-style community.

The garden...

The "Barbary" -- that's Berber -- pirates are said to have anchored here, paying duty to the Sultan for his shelter.

One of the Oudiya's many fashionable homes, river and ocean views...

View up the Bou Regreg river from the cafe. The small boats ferry people across.

The cafe.

View across the river at the city of Sale...

Paths leading out of the cafe and through the Oudiya...

The Oudiya from the ocean, a cemetary below its walls.

Saint's tombs on the edge of the cemetary, looking across the Bou Regreg River at Sale...

An ancient fortress once again, for a movie scene...
