Two Days on the Greeen Bay & Western
March 22nd and 23rd 1978
I recently scanned a few slides I made along this charming regional road, the Green Bay
and Western. This railroad operated for nearly 100 years, from 1896 to 1993, until it was
gobbled up by the Wisconsin Central. Looking today via Google Maps, it seems that most,
if not nearly all, of the rails have been abandoned.
In reading your opening paragraph on Page 1, actually the GB&W goes back 127 years
to 1866 when it was chartered as the Green Bay & Lake Pepin Railway which it was called
from 1866 to 1874. Then it was the Green Bay & Minnesota from 1874 to 1881, then the
Green Bay, Winona & St.Paul to 1896 and finally the Green Bay & Western to August 27, 1993.
The Kewaunee, Green Bay & Western was established in 1891 and ran as a separate entity until
1969 when it was merged into the GB&W. It was an on paper thing mostly but some equipment
waslettered GB&W and KGB&W in earlier days. Even when I started in 1968 if you worked
jobs from Green Bay to Kewaunee on your check stubs it was noted as “KGB&W Earnings”
versus “GB&W Earnings” if you worked Green Bay Yard jobs or road jobs west of Green Bay.
I still have those check stubs. That all ended in 1969. (Two paragraphs: Dan Luedke)
