That’s #4 leaving Norwood Yard at Howard St. about to enter the block between Norwood and McDonalds.
The signals were discontinued some time later. RS-27 318 leads the “boat” train and caboose 617,
assigned to the day crew, brings up the rear. The 2 boxcars ahead of the caboose have “orange”
paper tags on the sealed doors, indicating they are cars of paper out of one of the two P&G
Charmin mills in GB. The tags read “GB&W Paper Rush”. P&G crews tagged the doors when they were
closed after loading. “Orange” was used for GBW loads, “Yellow” was used for MILW RD. loads and
“Green” was used for CNW loads. This helped switch crews from each railroad identify which loads
were theirs when switching out the paper tracks at each mill on the east side of GB. (Dan Luedeke)
