Quarry Job
Here we see an L&N EMD GP38AC working the quarry northwest of
Bloomington—not terribly far from Bloomington High School North.
In previous times, these quarries would have been serviced by
locomotives of the Monon, but the Louisville & Nashville
swallowed up the small but interesting Indiana railroad in 1971.

Tight Clearance
Here is another shot of Hays Market, looking north on the former Monon.
This one shows clearly the tight clearance between Hays and Le Petit Cafe.
The Johnson Creamery smokestack, as well as the old grain elevator, were
iconic elements of Bloomington’s skyline (with the former still in existence).

The Milwaukee Road on the Monon
Here’s a photograph of a southbound Milwaukee Road freight on the L&N
(former Monon) in southern Indiana—the train is south of Borden. The Milwaukee
Road got trackage rights over this line, between Bedford and Louisville, Kentucky,
when the Monon was subsumed into the L&N in 1971.

Clear Creek
This is a southbound local on the Louisville & Nashville, former Monon,
at Clear Creek, Indiana (just a few miles south of Bloomington). The lead
unit on the train is an EMD GP7.

Southbound Floridian
Here we have a southbound Amtrak Floridian at Clear Creek, a few miles south
of Bloomington, Indiana. E9A number 408 (formerly of the Milwaukee Road,
numbered 201C and later 31C) is in charge of the train this day.

Southbound Floridian, Cloverdale, Indiana
This train is on the Louisville & Nashville—former Monon—between Louisville
and Chicago. The train is passing the aging depot, which is very similar to many
up and down the Monon line. Several of these small buildings, including the one
pictured, were carted off and preserved off-site.

Amtrak Floridian
This is a southbound Amtrak Floridian crossing over the ubiquitous White River—
just a bit south of Gosport, Indiana. At the time this was the Louisville &
Nashville Railroad, but if one is from Indiana, it is called the Monon regardless.

Historic Depot
This image was taken in Gosport, Indiana, on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad
(formerly Monon). Pictured is the historic Gosport Depot—this structure was interesting
in that it had a “run-through” track which allowed a freight car to be set out inside
the building for loading and unloading. I was dumbstruck as I watched the L&N
tear it down on the day this image was made.
