Continued: the former Ohio & Mississippi in Southern Indiana (5/6)
169: Eastbound train between Georgia and Huron
Here’s an eastbound local job on the B&O. I believe this was seen at a spot called "Moorestown" on Highway
60, adjacent to Beaver Creek Road. The lead unit is an EMD GP9 built in 1957. I’ve seen more than
one local down here running long-nose forward like this. One image taken Sept 3, 1975.
196: Between Georgia and Huron
This westbound train was also seen at Beaver Creek Road ("Moorestown" on Highway 60).
We'll see it two more times in the images below. One image taken March 14th 1976.
212: Near Willow Valley—WB at Deep Cut Lake Road, approaching WV tunnel
This train (seen before off Mill Creek Road, east of Mitchell) is now seen approaching
Willow Valley, shot from Deep Cut Lake Road. Image taken October 2nd 1976.
226: West Portal Willow Valley Tunnel
Here’s a westbound job on the Baltimore & Ohio in southern Indiana (former Ohio & Mississippi).
I read that the tunnel was built in 1899 to shorten the route by three miles. The western portal
states that it was completed in 1900. This location is east of Shoals by a few miles.
3715 is a GP40 built in 1969 or 1970. One image taken September 4th 1977.
197: Just west of Willow Valley Tunnel, crossing Beaver Creek at MP 142.71
We saw this train on the other (east) side of the tunnel, and
we'll see it again just east of Loogootee on the long tangent.
One image taken March 14th 1976.
215: Shoals Depot
We'll see this train below at Montgomery (again, this website is arranged geographically,
so we're looking at eastbound trains in reverse). In this second image of the train then,
it is seen passing the wonderful brick depot (sadly, no longer extant) in Shoals, Indiana.
Image taken October 2nd 1976.
186: East Fork White River at Shoals
Here’s the same train seen above (Big Tunnel, Going Away). By this time we’re west of Mitchell
and see the train crossing over the East Fork of the White River at Shoals. There’s some interesting
power in this lash-up: it's led by a GP38, followed by an SD35 (always a favorite of mine), a GP40,
with a Southern Pacific SD45 rounding things out. One image taken February 28th 1976.
204: White River at Shoals
This is a westbound local job crossing over the East Fork White
River at Shoals, Indiana. One image taken Sept. 12th 1976.
188: Tangent east of Loogootee
This is the same train we saw above (going away at Big Tunnel) and crossing the White
River at Shoals (broadside). Here it's on the long tangent just east of Loogootee, Indiana.
One image taken February 28th 1976.
194c: Tangent east of Loogootee
Yet another picture with number 3546 on point: it was taken a mile and a half east of Loogootee,
from the Highway 150 Overpass. The lead unit was built in July of 1964. The following units are of
the Southern Pacific run-through power: an SD40 and a GE U-boat. Image taken March 7th 1976.
198: Tangent east of Loogootee
We saw this train twice above (on the east side of the Willow Valley Tunnel, and then crossing
over Beaver Creek on the west side of the bore). Now it's on the long tangent east of Loogootee.
This slide seems to be marred by camera-shake, alas. One image taken March 14th 1976.
194d: East End Montgomery
Yet another shot of the train being led by 3546 (GP35). This is the east end
of the siding at Montgomery, Indiana. Image taken March 7th 1976.
