Vintage Monon: Original Scans

These shots, of operations on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad (former Monon),
were all made by Richard Koenig in the 1970s; see caption for location and date.

This selection of images was taken from scans done long prior to the Monon Project of 2020.

Hooping Up Orders

Here we see a northbound freight on the Louisville & Nashville,
former Monon, in Bedford, Indiana; the operator (Margaret Chambers)
is "hooping up" orders to the crew. The last I checked, using
Google Maps, the wonderful limestone station was still extant.

Update: the depot burned to the ground the weekend of September 16, 2023.

L&N Freight with Foreign Power

This is a southbound L&N train with Canadian National unit
on point—rolling by the depot at Bedford, Indiana. It has just crossed
over the Southeast Division of the Milwaukee Road and will now head
downtown to do some street running in Bedford on its way to Louisville.

Street Running

This is a southbound Amtrak Floridian with E8A number 498. The train is
now running on the streets in the very center of Bedford, Indiana. The
county courthouse is just out of the frame, to the right.

Southbound on the Monon

Here in a Louisville & Nashville freight train moving southward on
the former Monon in Southern Indiana on a sunny spring day in 1976. The train
is seen rolling under a Milwaukee Road quarry branch just north of Bedford.

Amtrak Floridian Boards

train is using the L&N, former Monon, between Chicago and Louisville.

Hays Market

Here’s a scene from just west of the downtown of Bloomington, and that
of an institution of sorts. As I understand it, the Hays family ran the
market in this building for about fifty years—from 1946, or so, till 1996.
The former Monon ran by the west side of the building.

Amtrak’s Floridian

Here is a southbound Amtrak Floridian in Bloomington, Indiana—the Monroe
County Courthouse can be seen in the distance. This short-lived Amtrak
train ran for just a few years on the L&N—which was the former
Monon mainline between Chicago and Louisville.
