Toundout: almond trees in bloom in Spring
In a desert too dry for cactus, these fields are irrigated by melted snow from the High Atlas. Visible rock outcroppings a few kilometers upstream force the underground flow to the surface, and four wells feed a beautifully-built and maintained network of irrigation canals that run to all of these fields -- managed by an intricate allocation of "turns" to hamlets, lineages, and families within them. Each family owns fields scattered over the entire area, and must irrigate each one by had an specified times. |
