Continued: the former Ohio & Mississippi in Southern Indiana (2/6)
Big Tunnel, East Portal (4813)
Here’s a strange, wide-angle shot I made at Big Tunnel, east of Mitchell, Indiana.
With the smoke going straight up, I assume the train is moving very slowly, if at all.
This is an eastbound train on what was the Ohio & Mississippi; at the time of this
photograph it was the Baltimore & Ohio—St. Louis Division, Washington Subdivision.
One image taken in the mid- to late-1970s.
Big Tunnel, West Portal (4009)

Big Tunnel, West Portal (4100)
First Class: here’s a westbound train blasting its way out of Big Tunnel on the
Baltimore & Ohio line through southern Indiana. Being a young photographer, my
shutter speed was not set fast enough to freeze the action, but I naturally moved
with the subject while squeezing off the frame and so luckily achieved a “pan” effect
here to save the day. I believe number 4100 to be first of the class (EMD GP40-2)
that was built for the road in 1972. The location is east of Mitchell, Indiana; the line
is the former Ohio & Mississippi and was originally built in the 1850s as broad gauge.
One image shot in 1976 or 1977.
185: Big Tunnel (going away only)
For some reason I don’t have a shot of this Baltimore & Ohio train emerging from
Big Tunnel, but do have this going-away shot that would have been made at the
same location. We’re east of Mitchell, Indiana, on the former Ohio & Mississippi.

238, 239, and 240: Tunnleton, Indiana (from across valley)
Here's a westbound Baltimore & Ohio train moving through the East Fork White River
Valley in southern Indiana. The small burg of Tunnleton appears in the third image.
This B&O line, between Cincinnati and St. Louis began life as the Ohio & Mississippi.
Apparently, the town was created in the mid-1850s when the line was being built
and lies halfway between Big Tunnel and Little Tunnel. The former still exists
while the latter was daylighted just prior to the turn of the 20th century.
Three images taken October 28th 1977.
192: Westbound at Tunnleton
This is a westbound train that I would chase between here, Tunnleton, and "Shops"
located in Washington, Indiana. Given the geographic layout of this website, you'll notice
the dented nose of number 3546 (a GP35) from time to time (color and then B/W).

241 and 242: East Fork White River at Rivervale
I climbed up a signal mast for this angle on a westbound train crossing over
the East Fork of the White River. The location is east of Mitchell, Indiana, on
the Baltimore & Ohio (former Ohio & Mississippi). I do wish the quality
level of these shots was higher. Two images taken April 2nd 1978.
211: East of Mitchell from the Mill Creek Road overpass
I'll have another shot of this train near Willow Valley. I'm thrilled with the
yellow-nosed C&O leader, which is an SD40 built in July of 1966.

193: Just east of Mitchell off Mill Creek Road
Here's our GP35 leader once again. One image taken March 7th 1976.
