Continued: the former Ohio & Mississippi in Southern Indiana (3/6)
205: Lehigh plant in Mitchell
This is a small diesel switching locomotive; it may be a General Electric 45-ton unit,
but this is not my specialty. This Lehigh Cement plant is in Mitchell, Indiana.
One image taken October 2nd 1976.
200 and 201: Mitchell, In the Yard
Here’s a little action in the B&O yard in Mitchell, Indiana. There’s a westbound train with
"wagon top" caboose, along with a pair of GP30s (I'm not sure if we're seeing two crews or not).
I believe the roadway here, crossing over the former Ohio & Mississippi, is South Meridian
Road/County Road 100E. Two images with a processing date of July 1976.
3707-1 Mitchell
Here’s a westbound on the Baltimore & Ohio in southern Indiana. This line,
originally a broad-gauge line called the Ohio & Mississippi, was completed
between Cincinnati and St. Louis in 1857. I'll have more of this train below.
This negative has all kinds of damage in the form of chemical stains, but find it
striking nonetheless and so worth the time it took to remove/retouch.
Image taken in the mid- to late-1970s.
219: Mitchell
Here's Chessie action on the former Ohio & Mississippi: the westbound train is seen east
of the crossing with the Monon (in the very center of Mitchell) near the yard there.
Image taken December 5th 1976.
184: Mitchell (SB Milwaukee Road on former Monon)
A nice view of the color position light protecting the crosssing with the Louisville & Nashville
(former Monon) in Mitchell. A southbound Milwaukee Road train is clattring over the diamond,
exercising its trackage rights it won when the L&N took over the "Hoosier Line" in 1971.
I believe these wonderful signals were designed by a civil or electrical engineer employed
by the Baltimore & Ohio, and can only be seen on the home road, plus the Alton,
which was controlled by the B&O. One image taken February 28th 1976.
207, 208, and 209: Mitchell
Local job: here we see an eastbound local Baltimore & Ohio job in Mitchell, Indiana.
In the first image it rumbles over a crossing with the Louisville & Nashville, former
Monon. In the next two we see it roll by the yard office just to the east.
Three images by taken October 2nd 1976.
227 and 228: Mitchell
Hooping up orders: here’s an eastbound Southern Pacific run-through train on the
B&O in southern Indiana (former Ohio & Mississippi). The crew is receiving orders
from the dispatcher in an old-school way, by being “hooped up” via a loop of string and
a “Y” shaped stick. The location is Michell, Indiana (the L&N, former Monon crosses the
B&O in the background of these images). The lead locomotive is a General Electric U33C.
Two images taken September 4th 1977.
243: Mitchell: Local Power
I imagine this is equipment for a local resting in Mitchell, Indiana. This is where the east/west
former Ohio & Mississippi crossed the north/south Monon (though by the time this image was made
it was the B&O and the Louisville & Nashville). The locomotive here is an EMD GP40 built in
November of 1971. One image taken in late February or March 1980.
218: Mitchell
This eastbound train, which sports a locomotive from the three principle roads that
made up the Chessie System, is seen west of the crossing with the Monon.
Image taken December 5th 1976.
